Out of Budpaest on Route 3 or alternatively, coming from Miskolc on the same route, take the turn-off for Gyongyos. This small town is a starting point for numerous tours into the Matra mountains, even more popular for winter skiers than its cousin farther north, Bankut. A settlement at the very beginning of Hungarian history, in the ninth century, King Robert Karoly gave it town status in 1334, primarily due to its success at producing fine wines. The southern slopes of the volcanic Matra mountains are a rich bed for grapes, baked to perfection by the summer sun.
