San Antonio is the largest Maya village in Toledo District with a population of about 1,000. It has a grocery store, two churches, a community center, a mission house, a health center and a hotel.
HISTORY
The Mopan Maya living in San Antonio came from San Luis in the Peten of Guatemala in 1883, escaping oppression and starvation. They called their new village St. Luis in honor of the statue of the saint they had carried, but later renamed the village San Antonio, after the younger brother of St. Luis. They kept Luis as their patron saint.
