An international legally binding instrument to control the production of and international trade in mercury is imperative. That is the message the European Union plans to put across at the meeting of the Governing Board of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), being held from 5 to 9 February 2007 in Nairobi (Kenya). The EU will not be tabling any proposals but will nonetheless be describing its own progress in this area: the January 2005 strategy to combat mercury pollution and the draft regulation of 26 October 2006 totally outlawing exports of mercury from the EU as from 2011.
