COURT documents released yesterday show how close four mountainbikers and two police officers came to joining the list of people killed by Graeme Burton.
Burton, a convicted murderer, fired a total of five shots during a few violence-filled minutes in the hills above Lower Hutt on January 6.
Earlier in the day, Burton had fled into the bush to escape police. He was wearing a stab and shrapnel-resistant vest, and was armed with a sawn-off pump action shotgun, a revolver, two knives and a baton.
Just after 5pm, Karl Kuchenbecker, riding his quadbike, came across Burton, who opened fire, knocking him off the bike. ...
