WASHINGTON _ It was a scene few would have predicted: several thirty-something black Republicans standing before the cameras to hail the end of a destructive welfare state and appeal to African-Americans to ``come home'' to the party of Abraham Lincoln.
Touting the election of a second black GOP congressman, strong showings by candidates in six other states and a record number of 24 congressional nominees, they said they felt more appreciated within the Republican Party.
``Black conservatives are here to stay,'' said Armstrong Williams, a Washington radio show host and national columnist. ``And the Congressional Black Caucus and civil rights leaders need to make room. ...
