Shell has since late 1989 promoted a project to have a 50,000 b/d gas-to-liquids (GTL) project, based on its Middle Distillate Synthesis (MDS) process, built in Algeria. But Sonatrach and Naftec have been worried about profitability and costs, with Shell's requiring much larger investment than GTL processes promoted by other companies (see Vol. 60, No. 5).
The Tinrhert Block contains about 120 BCM (4.24 TCF) of wet gas reserves and having the potential to produce 400 MCF/d. It has been tendered as part of an integrated GTL venture to produce 36,000 b/d of ultra-clean fuels for export. The GTL plant should eventually be expanded to 65,000 b/d.
