Naftec's five refineries have a combined nameplate capacity of 474,500 b/d. But four of them are very old, they operate below capacity. In June 2004 Naftec launched a big investment programme to upgrade all the five plants - part of a $10 bn investment programme for the refining and petrochemicals sector. The whole network of pipelines linking the refineries to the markets and storage facilities has been upgraded under contracts awarded in early 2003.
