Feb. 4--VIRGINIA BEACH -- Ruby Dee didn't pursue a career in the arts to get rich and famous. Instead, she explained Saturday to a group of conference attendees, she saw the arts as a way to continue the struggle for black equality. "We knew that the journey of our people was in our hands," said Dee, who also used the work of Jackie Robinson and others as examples. About 200 people attended the sixth My Sisters' Love Conference, at which Dee was the keynote speaker. The event at the Holiday Inn Executive Center focused on camaraderie, education and networking among black women, though men were welcome.
