Feb. 4--Joseph Williams was a year old when he traveled outside the United States for the first time.

He's since been on more than 30 short-term missions trips to nearly that many different countries.

The first trip was to Haiti. His father, J.L. Williams, was filling in at a church there.

J.L. Williams founded New Directions International in 1968, and Haiti is one of the countries where it has worked most frequently with pastors and churches.

On Jan. 1, Joseph Williams became New Directions' chief executive officer, replacing his father in a position he'd held for all of the organization's history.
