Heidelberg is very popular with tourists and during July and August can be uncomfortably crowded. However, during the quieter months, it is a pleasant town, which can be enjoyed without having to wander into any of the formal museums.
For five centuries, Heidelberg was the principal residence of the prince electors of the Kurpfalz (Palatinate). It was therefore an important political center and its position was enhanced by the foundation of the first German university here in 1386. The castle was damaged in 1537 by a thunderbolt but soon after rebuilt as one of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces north of the Alps.
