Synopsis: The late Gerald Ford left the White House in 1977 with an average job approval rating below that of most recent presidents, according to a review of Gallup Polls. His pardon of Richard Nixon sent his initially high rating sharply downward; he struggled to get majority approval ratings after that. Ford's retrospective ratings are quite positive, but few say his presidency will be remembered as "outstanding" or "above average."
