NEW YORK --The wooly sheep is causing international controversy, and a possible battle.
The American Sheep Industry Association (ASI), which represents U.S. producers of sheep products, including wool and meat, has succeeded in getting their checkoff program through Congress and signed into law by the President. This program will include assessments on imported wool garments, yarn and top, but not raw wool.
This checkoff plan, reported here earlier this year, was put before the Congress this summer. It was very quietly passed by the House and Senate in early October and signed by President Clinton on Oct. 25.
