Isaiah Berlin, who might accurately be called a great essayist, has constructed here the large "torso" (ix) of his life's work, a book from which much of his thematic oeuvre would emerge (the editor calls this Berlin's "intellectual auto-parasitism"). Anyone familiar with Berlin's essays will find this book familiar, though there is much here that is new.
