Feb. 7--SAN ANDREAS -- Calaveras County's troubled Building Department appears to be on the mend, county officials and even critics from the local building industry said Tuesday during a public workshop. Officials said they are quickly reducing the backlog of building permits awaiting approval and are even considering plans to someday make it possible for simple projects like decks or room additions to be approved over the counter during a single visit, as now happens in other jurisdictions such as Stanislaus County.
