CONVENTIONAL wisdom says that rent control is a terminal disease. once you've got it, you never get rid of it. New York still has rent control from a temporary, emergency during World War Il. Paris has it from World War I. Cambridge, Massachusetts, however, may be about to prove the conventional wisdom wrong.

On November 8, Massachusetts voters will have the chance to abolish rent control in a statewide ballot referendum initiated by Cambridge property owners, who took their case statewide after suffering 22 years of draconian oppression by the local government.
