ADDISON, Texas -- An overflow crowd of 1,200 turned out to hear one of the chief public defenders of the church's teaching on artificial contraception and one of its principal critics square off in a debate.

The Oct. 23 debate between Fr. Charles Curran of Southern Methodist University in Dallas and Janet Smith of the University of Dallas, a private Catholic liberal arts college, drew three times the expected number of people to the Harvey Hotel in Addison, a Dallas suburb.
