In both his terms as president, Leonel Fernandez has adopted a consciously more international profile than his predecessors, gradually pulling the Dominican Republic out of its self-imposed isolation. Before the beginning of his second term, he toured Western capitals to drum up support for his economic reforms strategy, was received warmly and was commended when the reforms began to bear fruit.
