CHARLOTTE, N.C._ Newt Gingrich is America's newest traveling salesman.
He is selling the Republican gospel: low taxes, balanced budget, smaller government. But he is also selling Newt Gingrich.
If this sales trip, some of it on a private jet owned by Circuit City Stores Inc., is successful, Gingrich could be the first Republican speaker of the House in 40 years.
Of course, all that depends on whether Republicans can pick up at least 40 seats on Tuesday, which some analysts say is out of reach. Currently, there are 178 Republicans, 256 Democrats and one Independent in the 435-member House, which Democrats have controlled since 1955.
