A blood plasma center that replaced a donor's red blood cells with another donor's cells remains shut down after an FDA investigation revealed other illegal life-threatening practices.
The Plasmalabs Donor Center Inc., a private plasmapheresis center in Douglas, Ariz., voluntarily revoked its license and closed in March 1994, shortly after FDA suspended the blood center's license.
As a manual plasmapheresis center, Plasmalabs collected blood from donors, mechanically extracted the plasma component, and then reinfused the red blood cells into the donor. Donors remained on-site during the nearly two-hour procedure.
