A bitter Benjamin Chavis said recently he accepted far less than he wanted to resolve his split from the NAACP because the long and drawn out dispute over his firing was hurting his family.
Chavis said he felt the NAACP never intended to settle his wrongful firing claims. Named executive director of the nation's oldest civil rights group in April 1993, Chavis was fired in August after using NAACP money to settle a sexual discrimination claim filed by former employee Mary Stansel.
Chavis then sued the organization, seeking the remainder of his three-year contract, which included a $200,000-a-year salary and various benefits. Throughout settlement ...
