Many multinational chemical companies have long held substantial interests in South America. However, with the fairly recent development of major petrochemical industries by state-owned oil companies, those with the longest- established production tend to have major stakes in specialty chemicals, particularly the German Big Three - BASF, Bayer, and Hoechst - DuPont, Monsanto, Rhone-Poulenc, ICI, Solvay, and Ciba.
