Green mortgages are being dismissed as gimmicks by experts who say homeowners may be paying well over the odds for their environmental principles.
Last month, HSBC was the first big lender to add an eco-edge to mortgages with a 'green sale'. But despite massive publicity, the bank's low-cost green mortgage lasted little more than two weeks before being replaced by a more expensive (and non-green) alternative.
When it comes to the other green lenders - Cooperative Bank, Ecology and Norwich & Peterborough building societies - the experts are unimpressed.
