MIMI READ: This Malibu house has the ultimate amenity: a view of infinity. If the front door is open, you have a clear blue view of the Pacific Ocean through French doors on the rear facade. How did the view inspire the decor?
MICHAEL SMITH: The decor is spare, relaxed, and masculine, which I think is right. The palette is oceany--pale faded blues and pale creams and soft blue-greens. But there are not a lot of seashells. It is not the contrived catalog version of beach houses you see everywhere. The iconography of anything gets destroyed if it gets too commercial. One more excessive use of white painted beadboard and I'm going to start shooting.
