Sydney Blum exhibited four large cocoonlike sculptures constructed out of carpet underlayment. The soft, hollow sculptures, somewhat larger than human-size, lay on the floor of the gallery like a set of oversized sleeping bags. Unlike her earlier sculptures, they are not sagging and deflated but full of loft and resiliency. Each piece has an opening at one end which closes down slightly to become a neck. In three of the pieces this neck turns up and to the side, giving the sculptures an alert appearance, much like reclining Etruscan banqueters. In the one piece lacking this feature, the sculpture looks more like a reed canoe carrying a shrouded corpse to the other shore.
