Despite the ballyhoo that accompanied the Oct. 20 publication of Pope John Paul II's intellectual autobiography, the book is actually a masterpiece of spiritual awareness that may take its place beside Augustine's Confessions. That is, of course a tall order. Still, Crossing the Threshold of Hope has an the elements of a classical exposition of human religious awareness in 20th century terms.
The book is not easily read. John Paul's theological vocabulary, his familiarity with a cohort of prominent saints, scholars, politicians, poets and churchmen from Aristotle to Wyzynski, as well as his globetrotting pastoral experience in more than 60 overseas jaunts, give ...
