Famed pianist's mother overcame scoliosis, thrived for century.

Feb. 13--Shortly after Dorothy Dick was born, doctors said they didn't expect her to live very long. The problem was severe scoliosis -- curvature of the spine, a condition that usually worsens as the patient grows older. Injury to the lungs and heart is a frequent complication. Her doctors also thought that she could never have a child. When Dorothy Dick died Feb. 4 in her Round Top home, she had lived for 100 years, two months and eight days and was the mother of a son.
