A 54-year-old Crystal Lake man appeared in court Friday and was charged with posing as a representative of a phony veterans group to solicit donations outside a store.
John D. Cantrell faces a misdemeanor charge of false personation stemming from the Jan. 19 incident in which he took money for the made-up group from patrons of the Sam's Club store in Crystal Lake, authorities said.
Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Dennis Harris said Cantrell had collected about $50 from store customers that day when officers were called to the business to check on him. When questioned, Harris said, Cantrell told officers he was ...
