The post office network is extensive. There are 8,000 rural branches and 6,500 urban branches, making it a larger network than any retail or banking multiple in the UK. However in recent years the network has suffered significant financial losses, predominantly as a result of the removal of government business. In 2003, the network lost 40% of its income as benefits and pensions payments were paid directly into bank accounts by the Government.
Another key transaction, buying stamps, has changed now that they are sold in many other outlets.
