Feb. 15--Shares of Tulsa's Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. surged 11 percent Wednesday after reports surfaced of a possible merger with crosstown rival Vanguard Car Rental Group Inc.

The New York Times reported that the companies, which operate Dollar, Thrifty, National and Alamo car rental brands, are in early merger talks on a possible deal valued at $3 billion. The newspaper cited unidentified sources involved in the discussions.

Spokesmen at both Dollar Thrifty and Vanguard declined to comment.

Dollar Thrifty employs about 1,500 people in Tulsa. Privately held Vanguard has more than 600 employees at its ...
