BANGKOK, Thailand -- THAILAND is a net importer of oil, even though the Country is actually an oil producer. The first and most significant oilfield discovered in Thailand was the Sirikit, east of the Mae Sot basin.

The Sirikit oilfield was discovered in 1981 by Thai Shell Exploration and Production Co., Ltd. Oil from Sirikit began to flow in December 1982, which marked the beginning of Thailand's commercial oil production. To this day, Sirikit remains the country's most productive onshore oilfield, with an output of 20,000 barrels per day.
