For anyone familiar with The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1979; 2nd ed. 1993, co-edited by John Clute and Peter Nicholls), a comparison with the new Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction Literature by Brian Stableford (who was also a contributing editor to both editions of Clute and Nicholls's seminal work) seems inevitable. Stableford's new reference book, confined to around 500 pages, is the first in a series of Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts.
