One day in 1346 three galleys that had been trading in the East arrived in the harbor at Genoa. They were driven back to sea by flaming arrows, but it was too late: the plague had reached mainland Europe. This, at least, is one story. For the past decade, there had been rumours of something dreadful happening in distant lands, of the countryside covered with dead bodies.
