ATLANTA -- Stage IV melanoma patients lived much longer than expected after undergoing surgery for metastatic disease in a prospective registry trial presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Jeffrey A. Sosman reported median overall survival had reached 21 months for 62 patients who were completely resected in the study by the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), a cooperative research organization.
This was three times longer than the 7-month median that SWOG had achieved in previous phase II studies enrolling a total of 412 stage IV melanoma patients.
