I prune my fruit trees in December, when they have all lost their leaves. I'll also feed them. A feeding then will promote winter hardiness, and store nutrients through winter and early spring when they will be fed again. It will aid in making the underground root growth stronger. Feeder roots are located around the drip line, or outer edges of the "umbrella" of the tree branches. Those roots take up any fertilizer and water.
