Last summer was the first time we had ordered chicks in years. Once, back on our old farmstead, we placed an order for 25 chicks at the hatchery, of which breed I cannot recall with any certainty. That was the first and, until spring of 2006, the last time we ever purchased chickens, some 16 years ago.

Soon after we moved onto the old farmstead the priest at the local Catholic Church decided it would be a joyous deed to give a chick to each child at Easter Mass.
