IS this the most important Black man in America?" read the headline of a 1969 Look magazine cover story on "the Godfather of Soul," as James Brown had come to be known.
If there was any doubt then, there certainly is no argument today about just how influential James Brown was to generations of entertainers and others who have followed him. For if imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, then "Soul Brother No. 1" was not only "the hardest-working man in show business," but the most flattered.
