THE ever-mighty private equity world was flexing its muscles at some of British business's best-known names last week after a hectic few days of manoeuvring in a sector loathed by unions and viewed nervously by bosses fearful for their own jobs.

Targets as diverse as Sainsbury's and tapas chain La Tasca have been placed under scrutiny, and are among several well-known names to attract recent interest.
