Arnold B. Zetcher, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Talbots Inc., will retire in 2008 after 20 years of leading the company.

Considering the turbulent nature of retailing and its high rate of executive turnover, Zetcher's stint at the helm of the specialty retailer was an unusually long one. He joined Talbots as president in 1987, rose to president and ceo the next year, and in 2000 added the title of chairman.

Zetcher said he planned to continue as ceo and president until Feb. 2, 2008, the end of this fiscal year, and as chairman through March 2008, in accordance with his contract. But he added he could ...
