Feb. 18--The $7,700 hospital bill came as a shock to Beverly Gray-Kreuzberg. The 57-year-old Beaverton resident had hospital insurance when an ambulance took her to the emergency room. Gray-Kreuzberg stayed overnight for tests and observation to rule out heart attack, but her hospital coverage didn't apply because the attending doctor didn't formally record her stay as an inpatient case.
Gray-Kreuzberg couldn't pay the bill as quickly as the hospital demanded and ended up hearing from a collection agency, which is compounding her debt with added interest.
