Accountants can receive dozens of rejection codes when attempting to file their clients' returns electronically, but roughly 75 percent of the errors are related to names and Social Security numbers, and 98 percent of rejects can be pinpointed to the exact problem, according to Kathy Howell, senior tax specialist at the IRS.
The biggest tips, although seemingly obvious, are to ask to see a picture ID and Social Security card, double check year of birth, TINs, and EINs; and look at last year's return.
