Tony Martin's approach to gestural abstraction involves a dynamic balance between aggressive paint handling and an overall compositional clarity. The layering in his paintings suggests that he works to maintain an air of spontaneity while aspiring to an appearance of inevitability. His most successful works look as though they might have been realized in one afternoon - though there are probably several earlier versions underneath the surface.
