William Daley was named emeritus professor at Philadelphia's University of the Arts in 1990 and received the College Art Association's award for distinguished teaching of art in `91. He arrived in Philly in 1957 and within a decade had established a signature style in ceramics that carried him to national prominence in that field. From the earliest of the 40-some works in this survey (curated by Matthew Drutt for the Levy Gallery at Moore College of Art), it's clear that Daley has always preferred decisive shapes and carved contours. His `50s pots are domestic in scale and simple in profile, and often their relief surface is independent of form, interesting for itself. ...
