Feb. 20--PANAMA CITY -- Alifelong educator and now community matriarch, Louella Washington was more than a witness to the injustices of school segregation in Panama City -- she was a conduit for change.

Separate but unequal was a way of life for black students and teachers prior to the civil rights movement, said Washington, who looks decades younger than her 93 years.

Second-hand books, supplies, even sports uniforms from the white schools were common, she said.
