CHICAGO -- Illicit subcutaneous injections of liquid silicone are landing patients in the emergency department, and can cause pulmonary emboli and death, Dr. Carlos Restrepo reported at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.
As a result, physicians should consider silicone-induced pulmonary emboli in the differential diagnosis of transsexual men who present for emergent care with symptoms of respiratory distress and fever, he said.
Liquid silicone, or polydimethylsiloxane fluid, is not approved in the United States, but is popular in the underground cosmetic trade where it is frequently injected into the breast or buttocks.
