TONY Blair held out the promise of lower road taxes in a personal e-mail to 1.6 million opponents of road pricing.
He said some motorists might actually save money, as he wrote to everyone who signed a petition condemning the plans.
But the Prime Minister also warned he would not back down over plans to bring in road pricing schemes. He said: "I believe that at least we need to explore the contribution road pricing can make to tackling congestion."
The Shropshire businessman behind the petition said he was not reassured.
