MESA, Ariz. -The first sign the Cubs and pitcher Carlos Zambrano had reached a settlement in their salary-arbitration case came when Major League Baseball officials began wheeling soft-drink carts out of the meeting room at a downtown Phoenix hotel.
But things were ever so close to a hearing.
They weren't so close that both parties were in the room, but they were close enough that people from MLB, the players association and at least part of the arbitration panel were ready and waiting.
