The University of Maryland will do whatever it takes to keep its scholarship program for Black students, president William E. Kirwan, recently vowed.
If keeping the scholarship program means appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court, the university is prepared to do it, Kirwan maintained.
A unanimous three-judge panel of the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled recently that the College Park, MD, campus must discontinue its Benjamin Banneker scholarship program, despite evidence of past discrimination presented by the university.
