Georgetown, Ohio, was full of excitement. A traveling circus was in town. In the ring, a trick pony threw off one rider after another. Then came young Ulysses Grant's turn. The pony bucked and kicked, but Ulysses held tightly. Not even a monkey tossed onto the pony's back by a circus clown could distract the boy. He hung on and won the prize.
Throughout his life, Ulysses had a passion for horses. Because his father owned and operated a successful tannery, when Ulysses was a toddler, he would crawl among the teams of horses there, sometimes even swinging from their tails.
