Feb. 23--MESA, Ariz. -- The Alfonso Soriano experiment will be scrutinized this spring, mainly because it could lead to a game of musical chairs in the outfield if he can't handle the switch to center field. The Cubs are gambling that a questionable defense won't have ill effects on the pitchers because the bats of Soriano, Cliff Floyd and Jacque Jones will offset any deficiencies. It's a risk, but one the Cubs are willing to live with.
