Feb. 23--MESA, Ariz. -- The Alfonso Soriano experiment will be scrutinized this spring, mainly because it could lead to a game of musical chairs in the outfield if he can't handle the switch to center field. The Cubs are gambling that a questionable defense won't have ill effects on the pitchers because the bats of Soriano, Cliff Floyd and Jacque Jones will offset any deficiencies. It's a risk, but one the Cubs are willing to live with. After all, it couldn't be much worse than last year, when the entire outfield had 15 assists, or seven fewer than Soriano recorded while leading all major-league outfielders in his first year after moving ...
