Feb. 23--TOKYO -- The Japan Sumo Association and 17 sumo wrestlers, including Mongolian-born grand champion Asashoryu, filed a lawsuit Friday against a magazine publisher seeking 480 million yen in damages for defaming them in articles which alleged bout-rigging.
The plaintiffs filed the lawsuit with the Tokyo District Court against Kodansha Ltd., the publisher of the tabloid-style weekly Shukan Gendai, two of its officials and Yorimasa Takeda, the writer of the articles. The plaintiffs also demanded that an apology be published for the reports.
It is the first time that the JSA has filed a civil lawsuit, according to the association. All of the 17 ...
